Visa and Mastercard are accepted for deposits almost everywhere, including Ontario-registered casinos and offshore sites. Getting money back onto a card is a different story. Whether it is possible, how much you can receive and how long it takes depend on two things: the payout technology the casino uses, and the type of card you hold.
Refund vs push payout: why card speeds vary so much
The two ways casinos send money to a card | Refund (reversal of deposit) | Push payout (Visa Direct / Mastercard Send) |
|---|
| How it works | The casino reverses your earlier deposit | The casino sends a new payment to your card through the network's payout service |
| Typical arrival | 2–5 business days | Minutes to about 2 business days, depending on your issuer |
| Amount you can receive | Often only up to what you deposited by card | Usually winnings as well, within casino limits |
| What you see on your statement | A refund or credit | A payment or credit |
| How to tell which one a casino uses | Terms mention 'refund' or 'up to the deposit amount' | Terms mention card payouts of winnings; ask support if unclear |
Push payouts, sold to merchants as Visa Direct and Mastercard Send, are why some casinos can now credit a card within hours. Whether the money is usable that quickly also depends on your card issuer, which decides how fast incoming payments post to your account.
Which cards can receive casino winnings?
Card types and payouts (casino and issuer rules vary)| Card type | Deposits | Withdrawals | Watch out for |
|---|
| Visa Debit / debit Mastercard (Canadian bank) | Widely accepted | Most likely to be accepted for payouts | Daily purchase limits on the card |
| Visa / Mastercard credit card | Accepted by many casinos; some banks block gambling | Sometimes, often refund-only | Cash-advance fees and immediate interest on deposits |
| Reloadable prepaid Visa/Mastercard | Depends on issuer | Occasionally | Issuer may block gambling; load limits |
| Gift / non-reloadable prepaid card | Sometimes | Rarely or never | No way to receive refunds |
| Business card | Sometimes | Rarely | Name mismatch with your casino account |
A payout to a credit card reduces what you owe rather than landing as spendable cash. If the card has a credit balance afterwards, you can usually ask your issuer for a refund of the balance, but that adds time.
Recorded card payout times at casinos we list
The casinos below accept Visa and record a card payout time in our database. Faster entries likely use push payouts; check each casino's terms for refund caps.

How to withdraw to a Visa or Mastercard
- Deposit with the same card you plan to withdraw to; casinos pay back to the card first.
- Verify your account; casinos often ask for a photo of the card with the middle eight digits covered and the CVV hidden.
- Choose Withdraw, select the card, and enter an amount.
- If the casino caps card withdrawals at your deposit total, choose Interac or bank transfer for the remainder.
- Watch your card account for a refund or payment credit, and keep the withdrawal ID in case you need to query it with your bank.
Closed-loop rules: a worked example
Most casinos follow a closed-loop policy: money goes back the way it came before any other method is used. Suppose you deposit C$200 by Visa and win, bringing your balance to C$1,000. At a refund-only casino, C$200 is returned to the card as a refund and the remaining C$800 is sent by another method, often Interac or bank transfer. At a casino using push payouts, the full C$1,000 may go to the card, subject to its limits. Knowing which model applies tells you how many payments to expect and why part of your win may arrive days apart.
Why card withdrawals are slower
- Refunds travel back through the card network and the issuing bank, which can take several business days.
- Some issuers post incoming casino payments only after their own review.
- Casinos may batch card payouts once a day or only on business days.
- Card payouts often have lower caps than e-wallet or crypto payouts, so large wins are split.
Tips for a faster card payout
- Use a debit card from a Canadian bank rather than a credit card where you can.
- Verify the card early so the proof-of-payment step is already done.
- Play and withdraw in CAD to avoid conversion.
- Ask support whether the casino uses refunds or direct card payouts; the answer tells you what timeline to expect.
Bank declines, cash advances and 3-D Secure
Card networks give gambling transactions their own merchant category code (7995), which lets banks spot and handle them separately. Some Canadian issuers decline gambling on credit cards entirely; others allow it but treat it as a cash advance, with a fee and interest charged from the day of the transaction. Debit cards draw straight from your bank account and avoid cash-advance treatment, though daily purchase limits still apply.
Many casinos and issuers also use 3-D Secure (branded Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check), which asks you to approve a payment in your banking app or with a one-time code. It adds a step at deposit but reduces fraud, and a declined 3-D Secure check is a common reason a card deposit fails. Our cards hub and chargebacks guide cover the issuer side in more depth.
Card limits and fees
Casinos rarely charge for card payouts, but card withdrawals often have lower maximums than other methods, and casino daily, weekly or monthly caps still apply. On the issuer side, the costs to watch are cash-advance fees and interest on credit-card deposits, and the foreign transaction fee (commonly around 2.5% at Canadian issuers) if the casino processes in a currency other than CAD. Our fees guide and limits guide have more.
Card payout not showing? Tracing it with your bank
Card credits are harder to spot than an e-Transfer because they can appear under the payment processor's name and post on a different day from when the casino sent them. If a card payout marked as sent has not appeared after the casino's stated time:
- Check pending and posted transactions for a credit under an unfamiliar merchant or processor name.
- Ask casino support for the payment reference, often called an ARN (acquirer reference number) for refunds; your bank can trace a card credit with it.
- Call your issuer with the reference, the amount and the date sent.
- If the card was replaced or closed since your deposit, tell the casino; the payment may bounce and need to be re-sent by another method.
Card payouts at regulated and offshore casinos
Ontario sites registered with iGaming Ontario, Alberta's newly regulated operators and the provincial lottery sites all take cards for deposits, and they tend to publish clear rules on which cards can receive payouts. Offshore casinos licensed in Curaçao, Anjouan or Kahnawake often process cards through international payment companies, which can mean a non-CAD descriptor, foreign transaction fees or a higher chance of an issuer decline. If you deposit by card at an offshore casino, check the processing currency and whether card withdrawals are offered before you play.
Mastercard withdrawal casinos
Mastercard works the same way as Visa for casino payouts, with Mastercard Send as its push-payout service. Debit Mastercard cards issued by Canadian banks are often accepted for withdrawals where credit cards are not. Prepaid Mastercard and Visa gift cards are usually deposit-only. See our Mastercard and prepaid vs cards pages.
Card payouts vs faster alternatives
Card payouts against other routes (speeds after approval)| Method | Speed after approval | Can receive winnings above deposit? |
|---|
| Visa / Mastercard refund | 2–5 business days | Often no |
| Visa / Mastercard push payout | Hours to 2 business days | Usually yes |
| Interac e-Transfer | Minutes to 1–2 days | Yes |
| E-wallets such as Skrill | Often within 24 hours | Yes |
Pros
- Simple if you already deposited by card
- Funds return to a familiar account
- Push payouts can be fairly quick
- No extra accounts needed
- 3-D Secure adds protection at deposit
Cons
- Refund caps may force a second method
- Slower than Interac, e-wallets and crypto at many casinos
- Credit card deposits may be declined or treated as cash advances
- Prepaid cards are usually deposit-only
- Lower withdrawal maximums than other methods
For the quickest bank-linked cashout, many card depositors switch to Interac for withdrawals where the casino allows it. Read more on Visa casinos. Gambling on credit adds interest to any losses, so if you find yourself using a credit card to keep playing, set limits and see our responsible gambling page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I withdraw casino winnings to my Visa card?
Often yes, but some casinos only refund up to your deposit amount to a card and pay the rest by another method. Check the cashier for card withdrawal rules.
How long does a Visa casino withdrawal take?
From a few hours with push payouts to around five business days for traditional refunds, after the casino approves the request.
What is Visa Direct?
Visa Direct is Visa's push-payment service, which lets a merchant send money to a card rather than reversing a purchase. Casinos that use it can usually pay winnings to the card more quickly.
Can I withdraw to a credit card?
Some casinos allow it, often as a refund of card deposits only. The payout reduces your card balance rather than giving you cash.
Why did my bank decline my Visa casino deposit?
Some Canadian banks block gambling transactions on credit cards, and others flag them for fraud checks or 3-D Secure. Try a debit card, Interac, or contact your bank.
Can I withdraw to a prepaid Visa or Mastercard?
Usually not. Prepaid gift cards are mostly deposit-only at casinos, so you will be offered Interac, bank transfer or an e-wallet instead.
Are there fees for card withdrawals?
Casinos rarely charge, but your issuer may charge a foreign transaction fee on non-CAD payments, and credit-card deposits can incur cash-advance fees.
Is Mastercard faster than Visa for casino payouts?
Usually not meaningfully. Both offer push payouts, and speed depends more on the casino and your issuer than on the network.
