Mastercard casinos accept card payments over the Mastercard network, and for many Canadians that is the easiest way to deposit because the card is already in their wallet. In our own data, Mastercard is listed by more of the casinos we cover than any other single fiat method. What you hold still matters: a credit card, a Debit Mastercard and a prepaid card are treated very differently by both the casino and your bank.

How Mastercard casinos work in Canada

Mastercard runs the network that carries the payment; your bank or card company (the issuer) decides whether to approve it. When you deposit, the casino's payment processor sends an authorization request through Mastercard to your issuer. The request carries the casino's merchant category code, 7995 for online gambling, so your issuer knows exactly what kind of payment it is and applies its own rules: approve it as a purchase, approve it as a cash advance, or decline it.

Casinos favour Mastercard because acceptance is near universal and deposits land instantly. They manage the costs (processing fees, declines and chargeback risk) by setting card minimums, per-deposit caps or a limited choice of payout routes. That is why the cashier rules for Mastercard at one site can look quite different from the next.

A Debit Mastercard looks like a credit card but spends money from your chequing account. Several Canadian banks issue one with their bank cards, and some digital banks and fintech accounts issue prepaid or debit Mastercards. For gambling it is usually the best choice: no interest, no cash-advance charge, and it is the type casinos most often pay winnings to.

Credit Mastercards, from basic cards to World and World Elite tiers, are widely accepted by cashiers but carry the most issuer risk. Premium perks such as purchase protection and rewards points generally do not apply to gambling, and points are usually excluded on cash-advance transactions.

Depositing with Mastercard

  1. Open the casino cashier and choose Mastercard or Credit/Debit Card.
  2. Enter the card number, expiry date and CVC, with the name exactly as printed on the card.
  3. Add your billing address and postal code if requested; they must match your bank records.
  4. Enter the amount in CAD and any bonus code.
  5. Complete Mastercard Identity Check if your bank asks: a one-time code by SMS or an approval in your banking app.
  6. Funds normally appear in your balance immediately; save the card only on a device you trust.

Casinos usually let you save a card for later deposits. For privacy and to slow down impulse top-ups, you can remove saved cards in your account settings at any time.

Mastercard deposit limits

Each casino sets its own card minimum and maximum per deposit, and many add daily, weekly or monthly caps and a limit on deposits per 24 hours. Your issuer adds its own: available credit or balance, a daily limit for online payments, and fraud thresholds that can pause unusual payments. If you plan a larger deposit, check both the cashier limits and your card's limits first. Our limits guide explains the layers.

Why Mastercard casino deposits get declined

  • Issuer policy: some banks block gambling transactions on credit cards, or on all cards, by merchant code.
  • Failed Identity Check: the one-time code expired, or the app approval was not completed.
  • Limits: you reached your credit limit, daily online limit or the casino's card cap.
  • Details mismatch: your casino profile name, address or postal code differs from your card.
  • Cross-border processing: some issuers flag payments handled by processors outside Canada.
  • Prepaid restrictions: gift cards that are not registered, or that the issuer has blocked for gambling.
  • Repeated attempts: several declines in a row can trigger a temporary fraud hold.

If a deposit fails, a quick call to your bank often clears it up. If your bank does not allow gambling transactions, switch to a bank-based method such as Interac, iDebit, or a voucher such as Paysafecard.

Can you withdraw to Mastercard?

Some casinos can send winnings back to a Mastercard, most commonly a Debit Mastercard, using Mastercard's payout services (Mastercard Send). To withdraw, choose the card in the withdrawal tab, enter the amount and confirm. Before the first payout, expect identity checks (KYC): photo ID, proof of address and sometimes a photo of the card with the middle digits covered.

After the casino approves the request, card withdrawals generally take one to five business days to reach your account, though some sites are faster and some slower. When the card cannot receive funds, or the win is larger than your card deposits, the casino pays the balance by bank transfer, Interac e-Transfer or an e-wallet such as Skrill. Many sites also require withdrawals to go back to the deposit method first to meet anti-money-laundering rules. See our withdrawal guide and KYC guide.

Mastercard fees

  • Casino fees: rare for Mastercard deposits; a few sites charge on withdrawals, so read the payment terms.
  • Cash advance: some issuers bill credit card gambling payments as cash advances, often a flat fee or a percentage, whichever is greater, with interest from day one.
  • Foreign transaction fee: often around 2.5% when the casino charges in USD or EUR; a CAD casino avoids it.
  • Prepaid fees: load, monthly or inactivity charges set by the card provider.
  • Debit Mastercard: usually no extra charge beyond your account plan, except FX on non-CAD payments.

Our fees guide compares costs across methods.

Prepaid and virtual Mastercards

Prepaid Mastercards come in two kinds. Reloadable cards, often attached to a fintech app or account, behave much like debit and can work at casinos once registered in your name. Single-load gift cards are less reliable: many are blocked for gambling, need online registration and cannot receive withdrawals. Virtual card numbers, generated in a banking or fintech app, work wherever the underlying account is accepted, but a single-use number cannot be used for later refunds or payouts. If privacy is the goal, a voucher such as Flexepin or Neosurf is usually simpler; compare options on prepaid vs cards.

Mastercard bonuses

Mastercard deposits normally qualify for welcome offers, reloads and free spins. Check the bonus minimum, wagering requirement, maximum bet and expiry, and whether withdrawals must go back to the card while a bonus is active. Our guide to bonuses and payment methods covers the common exclusions.

Mastercard safety

  • Mastercard Identity Check: the network's 3-D Secure programme lets your bank confirm online payments with a code, biometrics or app approval.
  • Tokenization: in Apple Pay, Google Pay and some saved-card setups, a token replaces your real card number.
  • Encryption and PCI DSS: card data is encrypted in transit and processors must meet card-industry security standards.
  • Zero Liability: Mastercard's policy protects you against unauthorised use, subject to your issuer's terms.
  • Alerts and locks: most banking apps let you get instant alerts and freeze the card if something looks wrong.

Protection applies to fraud, not to losses on deposits you made yourself; see our chargebacks guide. Choose licensed casinos with clear payment terms and read our payment security guide.

Mastercard by province

Ontario's private online casinos are regulated through iGaming Ontario and the AGCO, and Alberta's regulated market launched in July 2026 with PlayAlberta and AGLC-registered operators. Elsewhere, provincial lottery sites such as PlayNow, Espacejeux and ALC run alongside offshore casinos licensed in places such as Curaçao, Kahnawake, Anjouan or Malta. Card options and payout support vary by operator, so check the cashier of the site available where you live. See Ontario and Alberta.

Compare with Visa casinos, read about American Express, or see all options on our cards hub. If you want withdrawals to be straightforward, Interac or an e-wallet is usually the easier pair for a card deposit.

Using Mastercard responsibly

Card deposits take seconds, which makes it easy to chase losses. Use debit rather than credit, set deposit limits in your casino account, and consider removing saved cards. Some banks let you block gambling payments in their app. If gambling is causing stress, ConnexOntario, Gamblers Anonymous and provincial helplines can help; see our responsible gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Do Canadian online casinos accept Mastercard?

Yes, most casinos serving Canadians accept Mastercard. Approval still depends on your issuer, and Debit Mastercard is generally approved more often than credit.

Can I withdraw my winnings to a Mastercard?

At some casinos, mainly to a Debit Mastercard, usually within one to five business days after approval. Otherwise the casino pays by bank transfer, Interac or an e-wallet.

Is it better to use a Debit Mastercard or a credit card at casinos?

A Debit Mastercard is usually better: it avoids cash-advance fees and interest, keeps spending to your own funds and is more likely to receive payouts.

Why does my bank decline Mastercard casino payments?

Online gambling uses merchant code 7995, which some issuers block on credit cards or all cards. Limits, a failed Identity Check or mismatched details can also cause declines.

Can I use a prepaid Mastercard at an online casino?

Sometimes. Reloadable cards registered in your name work more often than gift cards, and you will need another method to withdraw.

Are there hidden fees with Mastercard casino deposits?

Casinos rarely charge, but your issuer may apply cash-advance charges on credit cards and a foreign transaction fee, often around 2.5%, on non-CAD payments.

What is Mastercard Identity Check?

It is Mastercard's 3-D Secure service, which asks your bank to confirm an online payment with a code, biometrics or app approval before it goes through.

Can I use Mastercard on mobile casinos?

Yes. Enter the card in a mobile cashier, or add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay where the casino offers those wallets.

Gambling should be entertainment. Set limits, never chase losses, and get support if it stops being fun: see our responsible gambling page.
